HCM Learning Series 4.0 Part 3: Clinical Conundrums in HCM: Managing Sudden Death Risk, Obstructive Disease, and Exercise in Everyday Practice

Join leading Ontario-based experts for a focused and practical session exploring complex clinical scenarios in the diagnosis and management of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). This interactive session will provide concise, case-based insights on applying evidence and clinical judgment to real-world practice.

Through detailed case presentations and expert discussion, faculty will examine key challenges such as risk stratification for sudden cardiac death, optimal use of multimodality imaging in obstructive HCM, and contemporary approaches to exercise and return-to-play in patients with HCM. Participants will gain actionable strategies to refine patient assessment, strengthen referral practices, and individualize management across diverse care settings.

Tailored to address the distinct healthcare landscape in Ontario, this session (Part 3) is part of a four-part national series covering Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario, and Western Canada.

Do you have a complex or challenging case that could spark meaningful discussion? We invite you to submit it for consideration. Selected cases will be featured during one of our four sessions. Click here to submit your cases.

Learning Objectives:

  • Apply evidence and clinical judgement to identify patients with HCM at elevated risk of sudden cardiac death.
  • Recognize common pitfalls in referral practices and implement strategies to optimize timely, appropriate specialist involvement.
  • Apply multimodality imaging to guide risk assessment and longitudinal management in patients with obstructive HCM.
  • Describe evidence-based approaches to managing and treating obstructive HCM in community and referral settings.
  • Evaluate current and emerging evidence regarding physical activity and athletic participation in patients with HCM.
