Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is an inherited, independent risk factor that promotes the development and progression of cardiovascular disease through multiple pathways. It is often referred to as a “hidden” risk because most patients have never had their Lp(a) levels tested. The 2021 Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) Dyslipidemia Guidelines recommended measuring Lp(a) levels at least once in a person’s lifetime, leading to an increase in testing rates in recent years.
